I don't buy that he "felt cornered". He just didn't care about what OP asked of him. Even if he did feel cornered by his sister, if he actually respected OP he still would've kept his mouth shut, imo. I've "felt cornered" by family asking invasive personal questions about myself and others, but I still hold my tongue...it gets weird and awkward, then I leave. It's that easy.I was thinking this too... OP saying no is going to make the family hate her... meanwhile he gets off scotch free and is the good guy to them in the scenario...she needs to tell him that he needs to tell his family no.
