I signed up in early 2006, so everybody doing anything remotely combat-related (or at least not a practical job skill) got a big bonus — $20k for me, ten after training and ten two years later, and I think 11B (infantry) was doing fucking $40k. With all of my stipends and kickers, I was getting $1150 a month in my checking account plus tuition (full state GI Bill) and $500 a semester for books just for doing annual training and drill once a month. The point I wanted to make is that mil spec, while hardly perfect, does point to a written specification that the item has to meet. “Military Grade” means nothing, it is marketing hype as it points to nothing. It is an overused term that is trotted out when you can’t point to specific standard or specification, but still want to IMPLY that it is something special. Much like those flashlights that that ex-fighter pilot used to hype on TV.That's always bothered me.
