I'm A Redhead The Rules Don'T Apply To Me Shirt
People forget that not too long ago encryption *wasn't* a thing. Everyone implemented it differently, from simple letter substitution to more complicated ciphers, but almost all of them could be reverse engineered and decrypted with a bit of effort. "Hacking" by reverse engineering the encryption algorithm and decrypting the data was actually feasible. Good encryption is *hard*. Many companies and people tried and failed to implement it correctly, Microsoft included. Encrypted zip files? Encrypted word documents? Encrypted emails? Encrypted licensing systems used by commercial software? All of them had "cracks" and "exploits" to break in if you knew where to look.
