Ha, I had a similar basic training experience. He went around the room asking, but the first couple people said "to serve my country" or something like that. After the second, he stopped to say "if you did, cool. But if you just joined for college, don't bullshit me. Tell me you joined for college money." Many of the answers afterwards included college.Also: these are just my personal views supporting the assertion of the OP, that the protection of American rights is usually the last thing an American military personnel think about in their line of service.

The point I wanted to make is that mil spec, while hardly perfect, does point to a written specification that the item has to meet. “Military Grade” means nothing, it is marketing hype as it points to nothing. It is an overused term that is trotted out when you can’t point to specific standard or specification, but still want to IMPLY that it is something special. Much like those flashlights that that ex-fighter pilot used to hype on TV.That's always bothered me.
