Ammonium nitrate is very stable on it's own. There are thousands of these warehouses scattered across the US. They're usually in farming communities and they store many tons in close proximity. While there have been a small number of accidents I would say that, compared to the volume that has been safely stored, it is relatively safe to store it this way.First story I read said ammonium nitrate. Typically used as a fertilizer, however that was also the explosive component of the OKC bombing in the 1990s. That was a quantity that fit inside a box truck, not an entire storage facility like this was. The number of dead will be in the thousands when all said and done most likely.
