I've read a lot about Stalinist Russia and it boggles my mind... Why jail your own soldiers because they got captured? It wasn't the rank and file soldiers fault. But I read something about how they were paranoid that they were "double agents" or, I don't even know.I'd also be paranoid about that but there are thousands of ways to solve the problem of spies that don't include enslaving your own army... Any semi-competent country has enough mechanisms to defend itself from spies during wars no matter who they are.

This is so right. So many that may have been on the fence or willing to vote for Hillary while holding their nose likely bailed on that news, which turned out to be nothing in the end.
